When I sat down with Chris Maliszewski, I thought we were going to have a conversation about music and survival. Instead, we had a conversation about what happens when life changes in an instant—and how those moments can redefine your purpose.

Chris shared how music, especially Pearl Jam, became more than a soundtrack in his life. It became a source of strength, identity, and healing. But one story, in particular, stood out. After surviving the 2022 mass shooting at the Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Chris was forced to confront life in a completely different way. An experience that could have left him consumed by fear instead deepened his commitment to helping others, building community, and living with greater intention.

That perspective became the foundation for the Walking Tall Movement, a community built to encourage resilience, connection, and showing up for people during life’s most difficult moments. Chris believes that healing doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens when people come together, share their stories, and remind one another that no one has to walk alone.

We also talked about Hail Hail Auctions, where Chris helps families navigate estate transitions and the emotional process of letting go of meaningful possessions. Whether he’s supporting someone through a life transition or encouraging others through Walking Tall, his mission remains the same: put people before transactions.

One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation is that purpose often grows out of pain. Chris chose not to let one of the darkest moments of his life define him. Instead, he used it to deepen his compassion, strengthen his relationships, and create spaces where others can find hope and belonging.

This episode is about far more than music. It’s about resilience, perspective, and choosing to build something meaningful after unimaginable hardship. Chris’s story reminds us that while we can’t choose every chapter of our lives, we can choose what we build because of them—and sometimes that becomes the greatest legacy of all.
